In a retaliatory move, former union minister and Rajya Sabha member Mani Shankar Aiyar on Friday officially represented India at the national day function in Pakistan high commission in New Delhi.

On January 26, Pakistan had sent a representative, who didn’t hold any official post in the government of Pakistan, to the Indian high commission in Islamabad for participating in the Republic Day celebrations.

Pakistan celebrates March 23 as its national day every year to mark the passing of resolution for a separate country by Muslim League on March 23, 1940. According to sources, a senior government official like a union cabinet minister or minister of state represents India at a similar function.

The move comes at time when the trade relations between the countries are on a high. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counter part Yousuf Raza Gilani will be attending nuclear security summit in Seoul this weekend.
