Police said the incident was reported around 1:00 p.m. in Nangloi in Outer Delhi. Constables Kapil Singh and Parvez, both posted with security wing of Delhi Police, were in a Blueline bus plying between Old Delhi and Tikri border.

Near Lokesh Cinema, Singh felt somebody reaching into his pocket for his cell phone. He caught hold of the accused and started beating him up. Parvez also joined him.

"There were four other pickpockets in the bus and they went to the rescue of the accused. They attacked both the constables and after overpowering them, forced the driver to stop the bus," said a senior police officer, who did not give his name as he is not authorised to speak to media.

A PCR van rushed the injured constables to a nearby hospital from where they were discharged after first aid.

The police have detained a 20-year-old man, identified as Mukesh, for questioning.
