The chilly winter in Delhi has created an unusual demand — wildlife meat — considered extremely warm.
Wildlife body parts are said to be sold illegally in certain quarters in and around Delhi and their demand increases as the winter sets in. On Sunday, four men were arrested from Gurgaon carrying jaw traps used to catch wildlife animals.
“A dead jackal and a small Indian civet were also recovered from them,” said Kartick Satyanarayan, co-founder of Wildlife SOS, a Delhi-based NGO engaged in wildlife protection. Meat of jackal is considered to be of high value during winter for the heat it generates. Civet body parts are used for medicinal purposes.
“Both of them were skinned near Delhi border after they were trapped with jaw traps and beaten to death,” he said. They were arrested following a five-hour operation by the Haryana forest department. All the four accused Maaman, Behra, Gunghroo and Bhalla are residents of Najafgarh in west Delhi.
The police are investigating the case.
