Rape and molestation cases have reported a drop in the capital city this year compared to last year with police claiming that their "innovative preventive steps" have resulted in the "positive" change.

According to the statistics provided by police, the city has reported 176 rape cases till May this year as against 212 during the same period last year and 240 in 2007.

Police claim there was a dip in the number of molestation cases also.

While 320 and 294 cases were reported in the first five months of 2007 and 2008, the number of molestation cases in the capital has come down to 200.

However, the 'Anti-Obscene Calls Cell', which was set up in December, has received complaints from 7,517 women till now.

"The rape and molestation cases may have come down. It does not mean that harassment has come down. However, our innovative steps like this cell will be of help for women," a senior police official said.

According to police, out of the 176 rape cases, 87.5 per cent of the cases were solved. "Out of those arrested, 14 are relatives, 12 are friends, 88 neighbours and 55 were unknown to victims," the official said.
