Police head constable shot at in robbery bid

A 40-year-old Delhi Police head constable was allegedly shot at in northeast Delhi’s Jafarabad during an apparent robbery bid late on Thursday, the police said.

Identified as Ajay Verma, a resident of Nathu Colony Chowk, the constable is deputed at central Delhi’s police communication team and was returning home in an auto-rickshaw from the Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT) at Kashmere Gate with three others when the incident happened.

“Jagdish Singh, the auto-rickshaw driver, told us that the other passengers had got off at the Seelampur traffic intersection and only the constable was in his auto when they were waylaid by three men around 12:30am,” said an officer.

As soon as he applied the brakes, one of the three men brandished a pistol and asked head constable Verma to hand over all his belongings.

When the victim resisted, they fired at him before fleeing from the spot. The victim, however, managed to call the police control room, which sent a team to the spot.

“We found Verma in pool of blood with auto driver Singh trying to control the blood flow. He was taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital where he is undergoing treatment,” the officer said.

Police said Verma’s condition is critical but he is stable and responding to medicines.Meanwhile, on the basis of Singh’s statement, a case of attempt to murder and robbery has been registered against the three unidentified assailants.

“We are trying to find the assailants; the investigation suggests that they might be local criminals. We are questioning history sheeters of the area and various criminals arrested recently for similar bids,” said the officer.
