Policemen miss target at shooting practice session

Only 50 per cent of the policemen’s shots landed in the inner and second inner circle, while 30 per cent hit away from the target.

However, 40 sharpshooters of Quick Response Teams (QRT) got their targets bang on. These shooters have registered a success rate of about 94-96 per cent during a recent session at the BSF shooting range. They were earlier trained at the National Security Guards (NSG) Complex in Manesar.

The police department, meanwhile, claims that the shooting success rate in general was above 80 per cent. Weapons being used include carbine, pistols and rifles.

"Only 8-10 per cent of them performed badly and needed repeated sessions," Braham Parkash, the weapon instructor claimed.

A total of about 1,000 field personnel have to undergo mandatory shooting trial before they are deployed for Games duties. Assault rifles, INSAS and SLR were also used for the training.

DCP (East) Vikas Kumar Arora tried to play down the issue. He said, "Majority of them are doing fine at the ongoing shooting session. Every year they undergo training. We preponed the practice session this time because of the Games."
