Politicians wary of chopper rides after Reddy mishap

Security advisers to West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee have asked him to avoid helicopters, in what appears to be an upshot of the tragic death of Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

On Saturday, a national television channel showed former railway minister Lalu Prasad asking a pilot to be careful as he prepared his chopper to fly the leader from Bihar.

“We often ignore the advice of pilots,” CNN-IBN showed Lalu Prasad as saying. “We should refrain from doing that. We should listen to them.”

Politicians are known for flouting norms laid down by government agencies for chopper rides involving VIPs.

So far, nine Indian politicians and public figures have died in 17 air crashes since Homi Jehangir Bhaba, father of India’s atomic programme, died in a plane accident in France in 1966.

The number of narrow escapes are many, and often the reasons are traced to deviations from the rulebook.
