The Indian power sector needs investments to the tune of $400 billion in the next five year plan period which ends in March, 2017, Power Secretary P. Uma Shankar said on Thursday.

The power sector plans to add 62 gigawatts of generation capacity -- using mainly coal -- in the five year period ending March, 2012 in an attempt to reduce peak hour power shortages and provide electricity to millions of rural households. However, coal shortages have seriously crippled power generation.
