On the eve of the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, a road leading to an important Games venue, the IGI Stadium, caved in on Saturday evening. The road is to be used by buses ferrying athletes to the Stadium. The cave in — called minor settlement by the authorities —prompted the Public Works Department (PWD) to go in for some quick fix reaction as the affected portion lies on the edge of the road leading towards gate number 15 of the IGI Stadium.

"It was a minor settlement as a drain coming from the Stadium and crossing the road below the surface settled in. The CPWD would be rectifying the drain problem," said Rakesh Mishra, PWD Engineer-in-Chief.
