Rumble strips on Dwarka flyover replaced

The Delhi Development Authority has taken the first step towards averting another potential tragedy on the Dwarka flyover in southwest Delhi. It has replaced the worn-out thermo-plastic rumble strips on the flyover with concrete ones. Jatin Anand reports.

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has taken the first step towards averting another potential tragedy on the Dwarka flyover in southwest Delhi.

After Hindustan Times carried a report titled “It’s back to square one on killer Dwarka flyover” on October 14, the civic body has swung into action– replacing the worn-out thermo-plastic rumble strips on the flyover with concrete ones.

The rumble strips had been installed earlier this year after seven accidents on the stretchhad raised questions about the 2-km long flyover’s design.

The DDA had installed thermo-plastic rumble-strips and speed-breakers at various locations on the three-storey flyover catering to commuters from the more than 5 lakh households in Dwarka. The rumble strips helps check a vehicle’s speed.

However, as HT reported, daily usage by heavy motor vehicles (HMVs) and lack of proper maintenance despite catering to a heavy flow of traffic had left the thermo-plastic speed deterrents either worn-out or broken at various places.

Now the civic body has swung into action once again – replacing the worn-out thermo-plastic rumble strips with concrete ones.

When contacted, DDA Spokesperson Neemo Dhar said, “The flyover division, entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining the flyover, is replacing all the worn-out thermo-plastic rumble strips with those made of bitumen one by one.”
