Sources said the institute had, over the last few months, already trained more than 6,000 such drivers.

For drivers in government organisations, this is a two-day refresher training programme during which they are taught traffic rules and laws, given tips on safe driving on Delhi roads through movies and classroom sessions and shown the adverse impact of alcohol.

"This is a useful programme that has been specially designed for the drivers employed in government departments. The training would be highly beneficial for them and would help in bringing down the number of road accidents," said Mahesh Rajoria, general manager, driving training and loyalty programme, IDTR.

"We realise that short refresher programmes for in-service drivers, where issues of attitude, health and self esteem can also be taken up, are at least as important in improving road safety as imparting skills to fresh entrants. Hence, we lay emphasis on refresher programme as on driver training for the fresh entrants," he added.
