Science cut-offs take a beating

At Miranda House, Zoology (H) cut off has increased by .67 per cent and Math (H) by one per cent to 86. ANDC has reduced cut-offs by two-three per cent for courses like Physics (H), Electronics (H) and Computer Science (H).

Cut-offs for BSc Life Sciences and BSc Physical Sciences and the popular Applied Science courses have either remained steady or risen marginally.

Science courses have been losing out on the popularity battle to commerce and even humanities for the past many years but the condition, it seems, is getting worse every year. Despite lower cut-offs, most colleges have to even come up with fifth cut-off lists to fill seats every year.

"While we do get students in the first list, we witness an exodus to medical and engineering courses in other Universities by mid-July. That is why we admit two to three times more students than the number of seats," said the principal of a south campus college on conditions of anonymity.

"Lowering cut-offs would mean we would retain at least some number of students even after the best goes to engineering and medical colleges," he said.

Relaxation for OBC
Most colleges have given between .5 to 5 per cent relaxations on general category marks for OBC candidates. Popular courses like BCom (H), BA (H) Economics and BA (H) English have a very small percentage of relaxation. However, evening colleges like Deshbandhu, Dyal Singh, PGDAV and Ram Lal Anand have given flat 5 per cent relaxation for OBC applicants.
