The direction puts a moratorium on sealing of encroachments and unauthorised properties in urban villages, known as lal dora areas, and unauthorised colonies till Dec 31 this year.

"Notwithstanding any judgment, decree, or order of court, steps shall be taken by the local authority, including de-sealing, to maintain status quo as on 1st day of January, 2006, in respect of encroachment or unauthorised development," the union urban development ministry said in a statement.

It means that no action will be taken against properties that have come up in the capital city before Jan 1, 2006.
