Initial investigations into the murder of 20-year-old Shobhit Modi have revealed that he was overpowered by his assailants before being stabbed to death, police said.
The police have not ruled out road rage as a possibility and are questioning vendors on the road. According to police sources, two different sizes of knives were used in the crime.
So far, the police are not sure whether Shobhit was walking or was in an auto while on his way home. "We have questioned nearly 100 autorickshaw drivers in the area as Shobhit may have taken an auto to return home. After leaving DLF Promenade, a shopping mall, Modi was talking to a girl, his childhood friend, on the phone. According to her statement, Shobhit was in an auto," said a senior police officer, requesting anonymity. It was the same girl who had called Shobhit at 9.45pm when the guard at gate number 3 of C-5, Vasant Kunj, told her that he was being stabbed. He was also in touch with another girl who called him thrice and sent 10 SMSes between 9.10pm and 9.45pm. Police are questioning that girl as well.
Shobhit may have taken either of the two routes from the mall to his home and police are trying to establish which route had he taken on Thursday. The road next to the mall is isolated and his house is less than a kilometre away from the mall. The isolated route is considered dangerous as it is surrounded by the ridge.
The second route is right next to Nelson Mandela Marg, the stretch where journalist Soumya Vishwanathan was killed two years ago. The Vasant Kunj police station also falls on this route with residential colonies on both sides.
A team of south district police was sent to question all vendors who operate near C-5 and C-6. There is an office of a transport company right in front of gate number 3 of C-5. "It was raining and most of us were inside. We got to know about the incident only at 2.30 in night when the police came here for questioning. There are no streetlights on the stretch and walking on this road in night can be dangerous," said Dharm Pal, owner of the transport company.
The police are also scanning the Facebook account of all five friends who were with Shobhit on Thursday. Interestingly, the Facebook accounts of his girlfriend Radhika (name changed) and two others have a common password and they had uploaded a few pictures on Thursday. Those pictures were clicked inside the mall. Shobhit was with Radhika till 9pm before the girl's father came to pick her up.
Shobhit, a second-year student of Manav Rachna University, had left his C-6 Vasant Kunj house around 4.30pm for DLF Promenade and was there with five of his friends till 9pm. The CCTV footage obtained from the mall also revealed that he was with Radhika till 9pm.
