SMSing while driving? Pay up Rs 1,000

The Delhi Traffic Police have now started prosecuting drivers who use mobile phones in whichever way — to talk or to send messages, reports HT Correspondent.

The next time you SMS while driving get ready to cough up Rs 1,000 as well.

The Delhi Traffic Police have now started prosecuting drivers who use mobile phones in whichever way — to talk or to send messages.

People using any kind of hand-held devices for accessing the Internet or data while driving will also face the music.

The Delhi Traffic Police have already prosecuted many violators under section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988.

“Using mobile phones while driving even with earphones or hands-free kit is dangerous as it distracts attention of the driver, leading to road accidents. Other use of mobile phones like SMSing is equally dangerous,” said a senior police official.

Section 184 of the MV Act attracts a fine of Rs 1000 for driving dangerously as well as threatening the driver’s life and those of others.

The traffic police will be on the lookout for such violators and book them immediately for the offence.

Apart from the roving police personnel on bikes, cops on duty at intersections too will prosecute people found violating rules, the official added.
