An application on your smart phone would soon be a gateway to online government services.

The department of information technology has developed an application -mobile seva - to provide all government services through a mobile phone. "One will have to download the application on a mobile phone to access the service," said a senior government official.

By using the application, one would be able to submit passport application form, seek an appointment for passport and for birth or death certificates. One would also be able to transfer funds from one's bank account to another using his or her mobile phone.

While the application is ready, the government is looking for a private partner to implement it at the national level. And, for that the department's Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) has sought help of the private players to link mobile seva with government's e-governance platform.

The government wants to leverage the 900 million mobile phone subscribers in India to provide services in "efficient, reliable and transparent" manner. If all goes well, the government intends to cover the entire country under its mobile governance plan in the next three years.

The mobile governance platform would complement the government's common service delivery outlets across India in a bid to provide government services through the online mode.

"This project has been formulated to fulfil the vision of providing easy and convenient services to the citizens. By having an integrated platform, considerable delays can be avoided for the launch of new services and uniformity can be maintained in service delivery across the country," the Centre said, while seeking private partners to implement the mobile governance platform.

The Centre's Mobile Service Delivery Gateway acts as the entry point to services available under the national e-governance service gateway. Mobile seva is a step forward to the government's decision to deliver basic financial services using cell phones.
