The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has decided to set up the biggest milk dairy in its jurisdiction at Najafgarh, from where milk will be supplied to the area. The dairy will be spread across a 140 acre campus, where traders will also be given plots to house their cattle.

Old dairy owners, who on the basis of court orders had recently been banned from running farms, will be resettled there along with new people.

Earlier, 374 farms were being run in south Delhi, of which 235 were shut in accordance with court orders.

“The South Corporation has vast tracts of land that can be put to good use. Since many dairies in the area have been shut, there was a demand for resettlement.

The plot at Najafgarh has been chosen to build the dairy where cattle and owners can be resettled,” said a senior official. The corporation will make preparations based on the unified MCD’s 180 acre Goga Dairy located in Narela where 1920 plots have been demarcated. So far, 1,327 plots have been allotted to the dairy owners.

The project was started in 2005, after the court had ordered that dairies be built on the outskirts of the city so stray cattle would not roam around on roads. Many households in the city consume milk from local dairies, which they assume is fresh and contains more nutrients.
