At 9.30am on Saturday, Saikia’s girlfriend, a student of English (Hons) in Delhi University’s Hindu College, dropped by at his place. The two had an argument after which she stormed out of the building.

“Saikia begged her not to go, and when she did not listen, he threatened to jump off the building. But when his pleas went unheeded, he took the extreme step,” said a senior police officer.

Eyewitnesses told police that Saikia was leaning against the balcony railing and was shouting out to his girlfriend asking her to come back just before he fell to his death.

Saikia was immediately rushed to Sushruta Trauma Center, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

“Prime facie it appears to be a case of suicide, but we are probing the incident to ascertain if the victim fell accidentally,” the officer said.

Saikia’s family in Guwahati has been informed and they are expected to arrive in the city by Sunday. His girlfriend, meanwhile, is in a state of shock.
