Five men were arrested on Friday evening for allegedly beating up a chemist close to a fortnight ago for not having stocked a particular brand of cough syrup that the daughter-in-law of a prominent politician from UP wanted to buy.

Those arrested include three Uttar Pradesh police constables – functioning as the personal security officers of the politician’s daughter-in-law – and her driver.

The incident had been reported from near south Delhi’s Safdurjung Hospital on the evening of September 17.

“The complainant, Ashok Malik, came to us a day after the incident,” said a senior police officer.

“He produced CCTV footage which was analysed before we moved in on the accused.”

According to the police, the daughter-in-law of the politician had a spat with the chemist, before the five men, who were with her then, began assaulting Malik.

The police claimed that they had been told that the arrested personal security officers were “protecting” a member of the politician’s family.

“They told us that they responded only because of being under the impression that the person they were accompanying had been misbehaved with. A case of hurt, common intention and under Arms Act has been registered them,” he said.
