A 13-year-old boy was killed when a reportedly drunk relative of the groom accidentally fired at the boy.

A stray bullet hit the boy when he was watching the wedding procession.

The incident happened about 11.30 p.m. on Tuesday in Prahladpur village in Shahbad Dairy where a procession had come from Bamdoli village in Bahadurgarh, Haryana.

The police said the person who fired the gun was drunk and fled the spot when he found out that someone died from one of his bullets. They raided several places looking for the accused, said to be the uncle of the groom. The police caught the accused, Barsana Kumar, on Wednesday morning.

The police said that the entire village was watching the procession. "One of the relatives of the groom suddenly fired from the pistol he was carrying. The victim, Amit, son of Ishwar Singh, was at the spot as well. The bullet hit Amit’s head. His father, who is a farmer, was inside the house at the time of the incident with other family members," said a senior police officer, on the condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

The police said that Amit was taken to a nearby hospital and the police was informed. The boy was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

They said they are now trying to ascertain if the pistol accused was carrying was licensed or not.

This is not the first case that has happened in the area. Last year, on November 19, 40year-old Urmila Khatri she was hit by a bullet shot by one of the friends of the groom. She was just watching the wedding ceremony of her neighbour’s son.

Ten days after that incident, three young boys got bullet injuries when a relative of the groom allegedly fired during one of the pre-wedding ceremony called ‘ghod chadi’.
