Sub-inspector (SI) Deepak Pandey — posted at the office of an ACP in east district — was in plainclothes and was returning home on his motorcycle when the incident took place. The inebriated men first rammed their scooter against Pandey’s motorcycle and then attacked him with bricks and iron rods.

Local residents later saw the men assaulting Pandey and rushed to his aid. The men, seeing the crowd, later tried to flee. A profusely bleeding Pandey, however, managed to overpower and nab two of the accused. The duo was later handed over to a police patrol team that arrived at the spot following a PCR call.

A senior police officer said that Pandey was on his way back home when he spotted two men riding a scooter in a zig-zag way through a crowded market. The men then rammed their bike into another scooter parked on the roadside and got into an argument with the rider.

“Pandey tried to intervene and quell the fight. The men, however, rammed their scooter into his motorbike as well. They then accused him of the purposely blocking their way. When Pandey asked them to behave, they picked up stones from the roadside and hit him on his head,” the officer said.

The men later called some of their friends to the spot, who then together attacked Pandey with iron rods and damaged his motorcycle. Pandey was admitted to the Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital where his condition was said to be stable.

“We are examining CCTV footage of the area. A case under relevant sections of IPC has been registered,” the officer said.
