The 23-year-old victim’s father was at an institute in the Uttarakhand capital to collect his daughter’s marksheet. He grew emotional during the visit and said he preferred Dehradun for her daughter’s education as it was “safer”.

“Ram Singh committed suicide because he must have been feeling guilty. I am happy that we have got some sort of justice,” he was quoted as saying.

The woman scored 70% in her last exams. The results were declared last year but marksheets dispatched in January.

“It was an emotional moment not only for the parents but also all of us,” said the managing director of the institute.

“We considered Dehradun a safe place for her to study. She would say that she would support the family after completing her studies,” the woman’s father said.

The institute offered to return the fees the victim’s family had paid for her education there, but her father refused to accept it. “He instead suggested that we set up a scholarship and name it after her,” the institute head said.

Her father had been accompanied by her brother. The institute did not make the visit public.
