According to police, the incident occurred around noon at north Vasant Kunj — metres from young Khushi Yadav's slum cluster residence.

Khushi was allegedly crossing the road with her mother, Kavita to buy biscuits from a shop on the opposite side.

“She was crossing the road with her mother when the speeding water tanker rammed into her and kept driving after she had been crushed to death,” said a senior police officer.

Her parents, Manoj (25) and Kavita Yadav (23) reportedly work as daily wage labourers and Khushi was their only child.

Police said that according to eyewitnesses, the six-wheel vehicle's driver, Laxmikant Yadav didn't stop despite repeated warnings from an associate sitting beside him.

“Yadav allegedly kept driving for half a kilometre after he had crushed the child to death till he was forced to stop by slum dwellers who ran after him,” said the officer.

According to police, Laxmikant managed to give both the agitated slum dwellers as well as police a slip.

“A case of causing death due to negligence has been registered against him and investigations into the matter are on,” added the officer.
