They don’t want to part with land even at higher package

There is a large section of the villagers who want to retain the fertile agricultural land for the coming generations instead of being paid one-time compensation by the government, said members of the group.

Jan Hastakshep (People's intervention), a Delhi-based civil rights group had sent a fact finding team to the Bhatta village on Wednesday to meet the villagers and see the situation on ground.

"The women of the village said the land is their mother and they can't sell it to anyone," said NK Bhattacharya, a retired Delhi University professor and a member of the group.

"There are villagers, mainly young men, who want the money to buy new homes and flashy cars but a large section feels that while they use the money now for immediate consumption, the future generations won't have any land to nourish them," he said.

The group has demanded an enquiry by a sitting judge of the Allahabad high court over the action taken by the security forces against the protesting villagers. The members of the group would also meet the National Human Rights Commission on Friday and appeal them to look into the alleged atrocities committed against the villagers.

"The men of the Bhatta village are missing and others can't enter the village. The injured require immediate medical attention but there isn't any," said Bhattacharya.
