Took part in crime to avoid ‘scolding’ by brother: Mukesh
It was an unusual complaint that Mukesh Singh, the younger brother and accomplice of the main accused in the gangrape case, came up with. And it came at a time when his co-inmates at the Tihar Jail had decided to shun New Year's eve celebrations to pray for the soul of the woman their five co-inmates had brutalised to death.
Mukesh has apparently told Tihar Jail officials that he had no other option than partaking in the demonic crime his brother and his friends committed.
"While the others have more or less kept to themselves and get all their information quietly by sitting in front of the television, Mukesh has been agitated ever since she passed away," said a Tihar Jail official.
"Last evening, we told them that celebrations inside the jail - always a low-key affair - have been cancelled this time. Then Mukesh started grumbling about how he was just driving the bus when the victim was being assaulted both sexually and physically. He claimed that if he hadn't been part of the abuse, his brother Ram would have 'scolded' him."
On Saturday, the day the victim died in Singapore, the five men, by a seeming ironic twist of fate, hadn't asked for newspapers which they did on a daily basis. They were confronted with the news around 11am after having stumbled into a hall full of nearly 12,500 inmates, who were in the middle of a solemn two-minute prayer for their victim's soul.
"We have been in touch with some officials at Tihar Jail who told us that the gang still has no remorse for their horrendous crime," said a police officer. According to sources, the men remain as 'confident' as they had been during and after perpetrating the crime.
"They were sure that the anonymity which they enjoyed as the crime took place on a school bus and because they were residents of one of Delhi's hundreds of slums whose migrant population is unverified by police would have prevented their identification," the officer said. He also added that this fact will form a substantial part of the chargesheet the investigators will file.
