Four members of a family including three children were crushed to death by a speeding train in the capital, police say on Wednesday.

The tragedy occurred late on Tuesday at the Shahdara railway station when the victims - Shamshad Begum, 40, her two children Farah, 6, and Mohammed, 2, and her niece Rizvana, 8 - were crushed under the wheels of the train while they were crossing railway tracks, police said.

The deceased, who hailed from Nand Nagri area in northwest Delhi, had just returned from Almora in Uttarakhand, a senior police official said.

"The victims died on the spot and their bodies have been sent for autopsy," he added.
