Two dead in Gurgaon expressway accident

It begins like most night outs do — a joy ride in a car. Three boys from Noida going to Gurgaon for a fun-filled evening. They eat at a roadside dhaba and it’s almost morning when the friends decide to return. Their car — a Skoda — is good on speed. But the night out comes to a tragic end for the friends. On the Gurgaon Expressway, the speeding car rams into a truck. Two lives are lost. The third friend gets seriously injured.

The accident occurred at the Shankar Chowk flyover on Gurgaon Expressway around 2.30 a.m. on Saturday. Naman Sharma was at the wheels. Gagan Gill sat on the co-passenger’s seat. Both 22-year-olds died. Gurpreet was on the backseat. He survived.

They were students of Amity University, Noida. Naman was enrolled in an entrepreneurship and leadership programme, while Gagan and his cousin Gurpreet were pursuing MBA. They lived together in a rented apartment in Noida.

The police said the preliminary investigations hinted the friends were taking a joyride. The police also found the remains of three beer bottles from the car.

“The three students were returning to their apartment after having a meal at Chinar Restaurant at Sohna Road near Rajiv Chowk. We cannot confirm as of now whether they were drunk, but we have recovered three beer bottles from the car. Only the postmortem report will confirm if the students had consumed liquor,” Uday Singh, Station House Officer of Udyog Vihar police station, said.

The driver of the truck hit by the Skoda has fled, Singh said. Naman and Gagan were dead and Gurpreet was unconscious when they were rushed to a hospital.

The police said the truck was moving in the fast lane. The Skoda, being driven at a very high speed, came from behind and hit the truck. The impact of the crash was so fierce that even the airbags burst.

Naman is the son of a businessman and was driving the Skoda his father had bought him. Gagan’s father is a high-ranking police official in Raipur.

“Gurpreet is injured but out of danger. After regaining consciousness he said they had come to Gurgaon on a long drive. Gurpreet did not sound drunk at all,” Dr. Viprashree of Paras Hospital said.
