Police said the incident was reported in a petrol pump in Madhu Vihar in east Delhi at 9 pm on Tuesday night. The victims have been identified as Harish (19) and Vikas (20).

The two men came to the petrol pump to get some water.

“At the petrol pump, a security guard, Rajender Singh, and some other men were quarreling,” said a senior police officer who did not wish to be identified as he is not authorised to speak with media.

“Before the two labourers could react, the security guard fired a couple of shots from his rifle. The splinters from the bullet hit the men,” said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity, as he is not authorized to speak to the media.

Police said that the security guard fled the spot after the bullets hit the students.

Petrol pump staff told the police that two men on a scooter had picked up a fight at the pump, claiming the attendant had put in less petrol. The fight got physical and to scare off the men, Singh fired from his rifle.
