Delhi health minister Kiran Walia, however, put the blame on the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for making “no effort” to prevent mosquito breeding.

Raising the issue under the ‘special mention’, Vijay Kumar Malhotra, leader of Opposition in the Assembly, said dengue was taking alarming propositions while the government was doing nothing to check it.

“The countries participating in the Commonwealth Games are concerned about just two things — security and dengue. It is a serious matter,” he said.

With the disease threatening to spread further during the colder months, Malhotra said no government hospital had so far created any special ward to admit and treat dengue patients.

The entire opposition was on its feet when the health minister tried to pass the buck on MCD and accused the agency for not cleaning and desilting drains in time. She also accused the MCD for diverting its 3,200-strong staff meant to collect water samples for collection of property tax.

It prompted speaker of the house Yoganand Shastri to ask Walia to stick to her government’s role. “Please don’t create a controversy. You please talk only about what your government is doing,” Shastri said.
