After putting a government in place, Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s focus now is on recasting and strengthening the party organisation at the central and state levels.

“There is a lot of work to be done… in the party,’’ she said in an informal interaction with some newspersons.

Sonia refused to divulge whether the choice of Meira Kumar as Speaker was sudden. But she was confident that the Sasaram MP would handle the House competently.

“She will make herself heard when she needs to,’’ she said to a pointed query.

Sonia’s comments regarding the work to be done in the party has also been underlined with Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi’s decision to keep out of the government.

The Congress president is expected to start the task of revamping the organisation once the ongoing session of Parliament gets over on June 9.

But if the ‘one man one post’ principle is applied, nearly half-a-dozen party functionaries who are ministers would have to be replaced. They include general secretaries Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mukul Wasnik, Prithviraj Chavan, V Narayanswamy, AK Antony and Jairam Ramesh.

Barring stray exceptions where the presence of Ministers would give a boost to the party — as had happened in the case of Pranab Mukherjee who is also West Bengal state unit chief — the Congress may go for full time office-bearers to ensure focused attention on states where the party needs to rebuild itself.
