The University Grants Commission (UGC) is inviting applications for scholarships and fellowships under its prominent schemes. These include Emeritus Fellowship, Dr S Radhakrishnan Post Doctoral Fellowship In Humanities and Social Sciences (including languages), Post Doctoral Fellowship for Women, Post Doctoral Fellowships for SC/ST Candidates, Swami Vivekananda Single Girl Child Scholarship for Research in Social Sciences, Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship for SC Candidates, Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship for Persons With Disability, Maulana Azad National Fellowship For Minority Students, National Fellowship for OBC Candidate, Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child For PG Programmes, Postgraduate Merit Scholarship For University Rank Holders, Postgraduate Scholarships for Professional Courses for SC/ST Candidates and Ishan Uday Special Scholarship Scheme for North Eastern Region.
The scholarships and fellowships are valid for academic years 2016-17 and 2017-18. The deadlines for submitting applications vary for different schemes. Aspirants must apply online only. The scholarships are mainly for postgraduate level and doctoral levels. In 2013-14, 41,970 students were awarded fellowships which increased to 56,024 in 2014-15. Till March this year, this figure was 69,435. There is no fixed allocation for fellowships and scholarships in UGC’s fund. The Central government releases block grants to the UGC for promotion, determination and maintenance of standards of education. In 2013-14, the fellowship amount released by the UGC and All India Council for Technical Education on fellowship schemes for students pursuing research degrees, was Rs 439.40 crore.
