An 18-year-old student allegedly committed suicide in Roorkee on Thursday after receiving low marks in one subject in the CBSE Class 12 exam, police said.

According to police, the deceased, identified as Prayas, used to live with his family in Adarsh Nagar area of Roorkee. “The boy committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan of his house on Thursday evening when other family members were out of the house and was spotted by them only upon their return late in the evening,” said SHO, Roorkee, Amarjit Singh.

He was then rushed to a hospital but declared dead by doctors, he said. No suicide note was recovered but police said initial investigation pointed to the fact that the student was upset about the low marks.

Police received information of the suicide from hospital authorities and said they could not ascertain more details since his family was still in shock and unable to talk to the police.
