Varjeet Walia, 26, of Jalandhar has secured the 21st rank in the Union Public Services Commission(UPSC) examinations.

Varjeet, son of a Punjabi Jagran editor Varinder Walia, is currently undergoing training with the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS).
Talking to HT over phone, Varjeet said it was like a dream come true for him as he was preparing for the UPSC exams since he completed his college.
Varjeet who has done his BTech in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, is now looking forward to making a difference in the society.
“The badge of IAS officer gives you the power to contribute to the society and work for its growth. I want to make a difference in people’s life,” said Varjeet.
Varjeet who is the first member in the family to clear UPSC, said he got inspired from his peer group to prepare for the exams.
In his earlier attempt in 2015-16, he had scored 577 marks in the UPSC exams.
Varjeet advised the students preparing for UPSC to work hard and leave the rest to fate.
Father Varinder Walia said Varjeet has always made him proud.
“He is very hard working and this is a proud moment for our family,” said Varinder.
