Elections 2022 Highlights, November 25, 2022: A total of 1,621 candidates, including 139 women, are in the fray for 182 seats. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has said that the counting of votes and announcement of the results of the Gujarat assembly poll will happen on December 8.

Gujarat is only a few days away from witnessing a crucial assembly election. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has been in power in the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah for more than two decades, is aiming for yet another victory. The Congress party, meanwhile, is striving to make a comeback with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also in the running. As many as 1,621 candidates are in the fray for 182 seats in the Gujarat assembly election, scheduled for December 1 and 5. In the first phase of the poll, a total of 788 candidates will contest for 89 constituencies. Of these, 70 are women and 339 are independents. A total of 833 candidates, including 69 women and 285 independents, will contest for 93 seats in Phase-2.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has said that the counting of votes and announcement of the results of the Gujarat assembly poll will happen on December 8.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said anti-social elements earlier indulged in violence in Gujarat as the Congress supported them, but after the perpetrators were "taught a lesson" in 2002, they stopped such activities and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) established "permanent peace" in the state.

AAP lot of 'hype', will remain 'marginal player' in Gujarat polls: Milind Deora

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has a lot of "hype" but will remain a "marginal player" in the Gujarat assembly elections, Congress leader Milind Deora said on Friday and asserted that his party would belie predictions to spring a surprise in the polls.

Deora, who is a Congress party observer for the Gujarat polls, said there is a "strong undercurrent" of anti-incumbency against the BJP government in the state and the Congress has opted for a very localised campaign that is different from the 2017 elections.

The Khambhalia seat of Dwarka district has turned into a battle of prestige between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party, in the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections.

With Congress also in the fray with a sitting MLA, it is also a triangular contest. Senior Congress leader Vikram Madam, AAP Chief Minister's face Isudan Gadhvi and BJP candidate Mulu Ayar Bera are fighting it out amongst themselves in the assembly elections.

Polling underway to elect sarpanches, panches in four Haryana districts

Seventeen percent of the voters exercised their franchise in the first three hours of polling on Friday to elect sarpanches and panches of gram panchayats in four districts of Haryana in the final phase of panchayat polls, officials said.

Polling began at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm in the four districts of Faridabad, Fatehabad, Hisar and Palwal.

Voting is being held to elect 929 sarpanches and 10,362 panches in 25 blocks of the four districts.
