UP polls results: BJP wins all seats in Varanasi, SP wins 4 seats in Prayagraj

Varanasi voted in the seventh phase of elections in 2017 while voters exercised their franchise in Prayagraj during the fifth phase on February 27.

Counting of votes for the Assembly election is underway for Varanasi and Prayagraj (Allahabad) districts in Uttar Pradesh. Varanasi voted in the seventh and final phase of the election on March 7 and voting for Prayagraj took place in the fifth phase on February 27.

The BJP won all the assembly constituencies in Varanasi while it won eight of the 12 constituencies in Prayagraj.

The Samajwadi Party (SP), meanwhile, lost in Varanasi but won in Meja, Soraon, Pratappur and Handia constituencies of Prayagraj.

Here are the results for the constituencies:

Varanasi:

1. Sevapuri: According to the EC, BJP leader Neel Ratan Singh defeated SP leader Surendra Singh Patel by a margin of 22,531 votes

In the 2017 election, Apna Dal (S) candidate Nilratan Patel Neelu won the Sevapuri constituency while SP leader and former UP minister Surendra Patel was the winner in 2012.

2. Varanasi Cantt: The constituency has been a stronghold of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 1991.

BJP leader Saurabh Srivastava won the constituency for a second consecutive time as he defeated SP leader Pooja Yadav by a margin of 86,844 votes.

In the 2017 elections, BJP leader Saurabh Srivastava defeated Congress’ Anil Srivastava by a huge margin of 61,326 votes. In 2012, BJP’s Jyotsana Srivastava defeated Congress leader Anil Srivastava by 12,852 votes.

3. Varanasi North: BJP has been ruling the Varanasi North constituency since 2012.

Here too, BJP leader and sitting MLA Ravindra Jaiswal won the seat for a second consecutive time as he defeated SP leader Ashfaque by a margin of 40,776 votes.

In the 2017 election, BJP’s Ravindra Jaiswal got a total of 1,16,017 votes, while Congress’ Abdul Samad Ansari secured 70,515 votes. The Bahujan Samaj Party’s (BSP) Sujeet Kumar Maurya grabbed the third spot with 32,574 votes. In 2012, BJP leader Ravindra Jaiswal defeated BSP’s Sujeet Kumar Maurya by 2,336 votes.

4. Varanasi South: Varanasi South is the second constituency that has been a stronghold of the BJP (since 1996).

Even though BJP leader Dr Neelkanth Tiwari defeated SP leader Kishan Dixit by 10,722 votes, he faced tough competition from Akhilesh Yadav's party.

In the 2017 election, BJP’s Dr Neelkanth Tiwari defeated Congress candidate Rajesh Mishra by a margin of 17,226 votes. While in 2012 too, the saffron party defeated Congress by a margin of 13,822 votes.

5. Pindra: BJP leader Awadesh Kumar Singh defeated BSP leader Babulal by a margin of 35,559 votes.

6. Ajagara: According to the latest trends, BJP leader Tribhuwan Ram defeated Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) leader Sunil Sonkar by a margin of 9,160 votes.

Initially, after five rounds of voting in the Ajagara constituency, BJP leader Tribhuvan Ram was trailing with 1,940 votes and SBSP leader Sunil Sonkar was leading with 13,054 votes.

7. Rohaniya: Apna Dal (S) leader Dr Sunil Patel defeated Apna Dal (K) leader Abhay Patel by a margin of 46,472 votes.

8. Shivpur: BJP leader and UP minister Anil Rajbhar defeated SBSP leader Arvind Rajbhar by a margin of 27,687 votes.

Prayagraj

1. Allahabad North: The top contenders in the Allahabad North constituency were the BJP, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Congress and SP.

BJP leader Harshvardhan Bajpai won the constituency for a second time as he defeated SP leader Sandeep Yadav by a margin of 54,883 votes.

In 2017, Harshvardhan Bajpai had defeated Anugrah Narain Singh by a margin of more than 35,000 votes. In 2012, Congress leader Anugrah Narain Singh won against Bajpai, who contested on a BSP ticket.

2. Allahabad South: BJP leader and state minister Nand Gopal Gupta ‘Nandi’ emerged as the winner after defeating SP leader Raish Chandra Shukla by 26,182 votes.

In the 2017 elections, Nand Gopal Gupta defeated SP leader Parvez Ahmad by a margin of nearly 29,000 votes. In 2012, Nand Gopal Gupta Nandi fought the election on a BSP ticket and lost.

3. Allahabad West: BJP leader and state minister Siddharth Nath Singh won the constituency after a close fight with SP leader Richa Singh. Siddharth Nath Singh won by a margin of 29,933 votes.

The 2017 election was also won by Sidharth Nath Singh as he defeated SP leader Richa Singh by a margin of 25,336 votes. In 2012, BSP leader Pooja Pal beat Apna Dal’s Atiq Ahamad by 8,885 votes.

4. Meja: SP leader Sandeep Singh defeated sitting MLA and BJP leader Neelam Karwariya by a margin of nearly 3,439 votes.

In 2017, Karwariya had defeated SP leader Ram Sewak Singh by a margin of 19,843 votes. In 2012, SP leader Girish Chandra Alias Gama Pandey beat BSP’s Anand Kumar alias Collector Pandey by 740 votes.

5. Bara: Bara saw a direct fight between the SP and the Apna Dal (S). Apna Dal (S) leader Vachaspati defeated SP leader Ajay by a margin of 12,524 votes.

In 2017, Dr Ajiai Kumar from the BJP defeated SP’s Ajay by a margin of 34,053. The BSP finished in the third position. In the 2012 elections, SP won the constituency after defeating BSP by 3,756 votes.

6. Koraon: Sitting MLA and BJP leader Rajmani have won the constituency for a second consecutive time as he defeated SP leader Ram Deo by a margin of 24,487 votes.

BSP leader and former MLA Rajbali Jaisal came third with 26,307 votes.

In the 2017 elections, BJP leader Rajmani defeated Ram Kripal of the Congress by a margin of 53,696 votes. Meanwhile, in 2012, the constituency was won by BSP leader Rajbali Jaisal.

7. Karachhana: BJP leader Piyush Ranjan defeated sitting MLA and SP leader Ujjwal Raman Singh by 9,328 votes.

In the 2017 election, SP leader Ujjwal Raman Singh was the winner after he defeated BJP’s Piyush Ranjan by a margin of 15,024 votes. In 2012, SP leader Ujjwal Raman Singh lost to BSP’s Deepak Patel by 404 votes.

8. Phulpur: BJP's Praveen Patel defeated Mohd Mujtaba Siddiqui of the SP by 2,732 votes.

9. Phaphamau: Guru Prasad Maurya of the BJP won after defeating Ansar Ahamad of the SP by 14,324 votes.

10. Soraon: SP leader Geeta Pasi won the constituency after defeating Apna Dal (S) leader Prasad Saroj by 5,590 votes.

11. Pratappur: Here too, the SP's leader Vijama Yadav defeated Rakesh Dhar Tripathi of the Apna Dal (S) by 10,956 votes.

12. Handia: SP leader Hakim Lal Bind defeated Prashant Kumar of the Nishad party by 3,543 votes.
