UP election results 2022 Highlights: The Bharatiya Janata Party won 253 seats and was leading on one, while the Samajwadi Party finished second with 108 seats and was leading on five

UP Election Results 2022 LIVE updates: Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the BJP to create history in Uttar Pradesh, chief minister Yogi Adityanath said on Thursday evening with the party set to return to power in the largest state with a huge majority. Despite a shrill poll campaign by the opposition, a wave of defections, and criticism over various issues - including the handling of Covid, safety of women, farmers issues - the BJP remained unaffected largely. The party won more than 250 of 403 assembly seats. Akhilesh Yadav - who had been taking on the BJP on a gamut of issues - was the Samajwadi Party’s chief ministerial candidate. He significantly improved on the Samajwadi Party's 2017 tally (54 seats). This time, the party is set to win over 120 seats. With caste dynamics playing a critical role as always in UP, Yadav's allies were leaders of the Jat community and those representing the backward castes. The Congress and Mayawati's BSP were also among the challengers. But both of them hadly registered their presence as votes were counted.

Exit polls indicated that the BJP will be able to cross the 200-mark in the 403-member assembly in UP and claim a majority. Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party was projected as the first runner-up. The trends show that exit polls were right. Ahead of counting of votes, however, Akhilesh Yadav alleged manipulation of EVMs. Some poll officials have been removed.
