Hours after it was revealed on February 2 that Bappi Lahiri was set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a baseless rumour about the singer-composer’s sudden death (due to alleged cardiac failure) started doing the rounds. However, in no time, reports proved the rumour wrong.

But Lahiri doesn’t plan on letting this matter slip. He is now going to “consult with the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell in an attempt to find out where the rumour originated from”. “Whatever has been done is not right. I have been inundated with phone calls from the press, friends and others,” says an irate Lahiri, adding, “Why are such rumours spread before checking with me and my family?”

Late on Friday night, Lahiri’s son, Bappa, started receiving calls from the press and industry members asking him whether his father had indeed died. Lahiri, who landed at the Mumbai Airport a few hours later, continued getting those calls.
