The teaser for Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana was released on Tuesday, introducing Ranbir Kapoor as Rama. See all the details you might have missed.

An introductory teaser for Rama, from Nitesh Tiwari and Namit Malhotra’s Ramayana, was released in India on Thursday, following its launch in the US earlier this week. A glimpse of the well-known story introduces Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, with Sai Pallavi and Yash as Sita and Ravana. While there are no dialogues in the teaser to hint at which scene you’re watching, here are five details that you might have missed. (Follow Ramayana teaser live updates here)

Lifting the bow at Sita’s swayamvar

King Janaka pledges to marry his daughter, Sita, to anybody who can lift and string the massive Pinaka bow. After many kings fail, Rama calmly lifts and strings it, as seen in one of the scenes in the teaser. In fact, he strings it so well that it even snaps in the middle. There are also visuals of Rama walking through a crowd while being showered with petals, which hint that the film includes the swayamvar.

From almost being crowned king to exile

One interesting detail in the Ramayana teaser is how it goes from Rama almost being crowned king while dressed in royal finery by King Dasharatha to being dressed in simple robes and emotionally bidding his father goodbye as he heads on his 14-year exile. The teaser also shows the chariot given to Rama by Sumantra being pulled through a heartbroken crowd as he leaves his kingdom. He abandoned the chariot after two days.

Killing giants in Dandaka forest to protect sages

In the Aranya Kaandam, Rama is described as having killed several giant rakshasa (demons) to protect sages in the Dandaka forest, where he spends his exile. Maricha, Khara, Dushana and Viradha are some of the demon giants mentioned. However, it is unknown if the giants in the teaser, which resemble trolls, are the same as those mentioned in Ramayana. Even the teaser begins with a giant rakshasa trying to cause chaos.

Performing Jatayu’s last rites who tries to protect Sita

Some visuals in the teaser hint at Rama performing Jatayu’s last rites. An old friend of King Dasharatha, Jatayu, dies while trying to save Sita from Ravana's abduction. To honour his selfless and brave sacrifice, Rama performs his last rites with the same respect as he would for his father. Rama and Lakshmana built a funeral pyre for him and performed the customary water rites.

Ravana’s glorious Pushpaka Vimanam

The divine flying palace, Pushpaka Vimanam, is created by Vishvakarma. While it has been depicted as a flying peacock in some adaptations of Ramayana, the teaser depicts it as an intricate, lotus-shaped, flying object. Originally built for Kubera, Ravana seizes it from his brother and uses it to abduct Sita to Lanka. It’s also the vehicle that Rama uses to return to Ayodhya after the war, before returning it to Kubera.

Ramayana: Part 1 will be released in theatres for Diwali 2026, and Ramayana: Part 2 will hit screens on Diwali 2027.
