McDonald's has been taken to court in Hong Kong for allegedly serving strands of human hair inside its hot cakes, a news report said.

Securities trader Bobbie Chou claims he found three strands of hair inside his hot cakes after buying a takeaway breakfast at an outlet of the US fast food giant in central Hong Kong in July 2005.

The case was taken up by government hygiene inspectors who told a court Wednesday that they found a single 16 cm black hair in one of the cakes handed to them by Chou, the South China Morning Post reported.

McDonald's, however, denied the charge of serving substandard food to Chou, claiming through its lawyer that it was impossible for a hair to get into food because of the way it cooked its hot cakes.

Chou told the court the experience had put him off McDonald's hot cakes for life, the newspaper reported.

Magistrate Raymond Wong of Hong Kong's Eastern court is to deliver his verdict next week.
