Pop diva Madonna screamed in disbelief Saturday when told a judge had refused her permission to adopt three-year-old Malawian orphan Chifundo 'Mercy' James.

Her lawyer broke the news, the shocked singer buried her head in her hands and yelled: "Whaaat?", according to Mirroronline.

"She kept wringing her hands and covering her face in her hands. She was really in shock," said a source.

The star has, however, vowed to appeal against the decision and a hearing is expected to take place next week.

High court Judge Esimie Chombo ruled against Madonna because she did not satisfy a law that says prospective parents must be resident in Malawi for 18 to 24 months before adopting.
