On the first death anniversary of Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, the city is gearing up to pay tribute to him in innovative ways.Updated: Jun 25, 2010 14:31 IST
Choreographer and dancer Rahul Saxenna has organised a two-hour music, dance and fashion event at Shanmukhananda Auditorium in Sion on Friday night. Saxenna’s troupe, RSDC, with TV actress Prachee Shah, will perform MJ moves, including moonwalking, B-boying, salsa and waltz, to his top 10 hits, at the event, called Can’t Stop Dancing…a tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. The proceeds from the event will go to NGO Hope Worldwide.
A new collection of MJ-inspired clothing, called Black and White, designed by Archana Kochhar, will also be displayed for the first time. Actors Geeta Basra and Udita Goswami will walk the ramp wearing them. Salim-Sulaiman will be the showstoppers.
“The men and women’s cocktail collection has been designed in fluid lycra, with sequined sheaths, antique Victorian embellishments and Gothic crosses, emanating lots of bling,” Kochhar says.
Kochhar, who spent 15 days designing the eight pieces, adds: “It’s a look inspired by him. I did not want to imitate him, but he had so much flamboyance. I just tried to capture his dramatic dressing in a modern context.”
Mumbai rock band, The Works, is putting on a tribute night at Not Just Jazz By The Bay in Churchgate. They will perform all of MJ’s biggest hits such as Billie Jean.
DJ Mac at Tote on the Turf, Mahalaxmi, will also pay tribute to the entertainer. You can bring your own MJ CDs and the DJ will oblige by playing them.
At HQ’s in Colaba, DJ Conrad and DJ Om are also dedicating Friday night to Jackson. Twist Lounge in Juhu has a tribute night lined up as well, with DJ Sudhir, DJ Johnny B and DJ Tinu spinning MJ’s hits.
Apart from playing MJ tracks at the Torrp outlets in Andheri and Bandra, walk-ins can also enjoy super MJ combo meals named after his songs, such as Stranger in Moscow.
His famous hits will also be played at the CrepeStation Restobars in Fort and Versova. Do come prepared for an MJ quiz and grab some cool FIFA merchandise as prizes. But be there before 8 pm to participate.
The Elbo Room in Khar is marking the occasion on Saturday night by offering MJ-inspired cocktails. So, sip a Moonwalker and try the move too!
