Seventeen-year-old Laura Diekman was excited to start a family but was ordered to abort her child. She is not an isolated case. Several women members have accused Scientology’s religious order, Sea Organisation of forcing them to have abortions.

The women members were threatened with strenuous work, constant interrogation, shunning and separation from their husbands in case they resisted, a lengthy expose in the St Petersburg Times has revealed.

According to those speaking out, women who refused abortion were shunned by fellow Sea Org members. They were called "degraded beings" and taunted for being "out ethics."

One of the women, who has filed a federal lawsuit against the Scientology organisation claimed her abortions were forced and was threatened of dire consequences.

The church has denied all their accounts. "There is no church policy to convince anyone to have an abortion, and the church has never engaged in such activity," church spokesman Tommy Davis told St. Petersburg Times.
