In India, Somy Ali might be known as Salman Khan’s ex-girlfriend, but internationally she is readying to take a completely different turn — into the world of politics. “In two years time, I’m going to run for the post of the city Mayor of Florida,” says Somy, adding that a powerful position like that will empower her to “help a lot more people effectively.”

For the uninitiated, Somy runs a Florida-based NGO called No More Tears (NMT), which is partially funded by her clothing line, So-Me Designs.

“It all started in 2006 when a Bangladeshi woman who had been physically abused by her husband knocked on my door. Several other women followed. That woman was God sent, because I always wanted to be involved with an NGO. It gave me a purpose and a mission,” she adds.

Ask Somy if she misses her stint as a Bollywood actor and she smiles: “I don’t miss it because I don’t miss being spoilt. Now, I’m facing realities with no one around to pamper me. I try to understand what is it to help others and make a difference in their lives,” she says, adding that she isn’t trying to undermine films in anyway.

“But at 35, you have completely different sensibilities. I do miss the Shiv Sagar restaurant in Juhu,” she smiles. Even though Salman is also involved with the charity firm, Being Human, she has no plans to partner with him. “I’m not looking to tie up with Being Human, because our charities work towards different missions. Plus, I need to take No More Tears beyond Florida to places like New York and Washington before thinking of anything else,” she says.
