The partition story

The brick partition in the bedroom is the highlight of jewellery designer, Anuradha Chhabra’s home.
From the outside it looks like just any other house in South Delhi. But, the difference comes to the fore when you actually step inside the Panchsheel Park home of jewellery designer, Anuradha Chhabra. Both Chhabra’s home-cum-studio sport a contemporary look and have been designed along straight lines.

However, it is Chhabra’s bedroom on the first floor that is an architect’s delight — it is large, spacious and is partitioned into a sleeping area as well as a sitting one. And the most unique aspect about the partition is that it is permanent and is made out of brick. (Usually partitions are artificial and are made out of wood or some such material). The partition comprises two pillars on either side with the space in between left open. The pillars support a curved roof, in true Roman style.
Says Chhabra, “Since the space in the bedroom was too large, we wanted to break it into two. But, at the same time, we did not want one free flowing space, therefore, it was decided to separate the sleeping from the sitting area with the help of a partition. And we decided to go in for a brick one, as not only is it permanent, but it also lends more grace to the living space.”
In fact, the sleeping area which includes the bed and two side tables has been built on a slightly raised portion of the bedroom. It also has a curved wooden railing that separates it from the entrance. The partition — which incidentally, does not reach up to the ceiling — is home to a television set, a music system and a number of photo frames and artefacts. Through the open space in the partition can be seen the sitting area beyond. This includes a contemporary looking cabinet and seaters in beige.
The lobby outside the bedroom, on the other hand, sports an ethnic Rajasthani look. It is replete with artefacts, wall brackets and pottery. Stairs lead down into the formal living room on the ground floor. A story in beige and green, the three seating areas in the room set off the white walls rather nicely. Mirrors and chic globe lighting further add to the effect.
However, all these areas pale in comparison to the architectural marvel of the bedroom.
