Celebrities have a new hang out hub. Here, they compliment each other, ‘follow’ each other and sometimes, even take on each other. Twitter, as the hub is known, is home to almost all your favourite celebs, and chances are you’re following them already. But who do they follow? With Twitter being voted the word of the year by The Global Language Monitor, we track down who the bigwigs follow.

Indian celebs like to keep the list of who they follow to a bare minimum. Filmmaker Karan Johar, who has over 46,000 followers, only follows 52 people, including actor Shahid Kapoor, cricketer Yuvraj Singh, and funnyman Woody Allen. Shahid Kapoor, who is followed by 20,000 people, follows only 15, including filmmaker Ken Ghosh, and ‘good friend’ Priyanka Chopra.

Mallika Sherawat’s Hollywood aspirations are obvious by the people she follows — actor Edward Norton, former model Tyra Banks and singer Wyclef Jean. Politician Shashi Tharoor, who has more than 5 lakh followers, has a discreet list too, following only 26 people such as Karan Johar and Pritish Nandy. The same goes for Priyanka Chopra, who has the maximum followers among B’town biggies — more than a lakh. She follows only 50 people including Rihanna, Paris Hilton, Shahid Kapoor and Lisa Ray. Among cricketers, Yuvraj Singh follows 36 people, Sachin Tendulkar, 20 and MS Dhoni, 15. And then there are those who don’t like to follow. Actor Akshay Kumar and composer AR Rahman, who have more than 13,000 and 26,000 followers respectively, don’t follow anybody.

International celebs have more followers than their Indian counterparts. Talk show host Oprah Winfrey, who has 30 lakh followers, follows only 17 people, including talk show hosts Larry King and Ellen DeGeneres. Playboy founder Hugh Hefner has more than 1.5 lakh followers, but follows only two — both Playboy playmates. Socialite Paris Hilton’s narcissism is evident in the people she follows — most are Twitter pages of her own fan sites.

US President Barack Obama, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and singer Britney Spears have no hang-ups following lakhs of people.
