Time to ditch the glasses?
Rahul Gandhi’s ‘no specs’ look echoes a new trend.entertainment Updated: Sep 17, 2010 08:11 IST
Noticed something different about Congress MP, Rahul Gandhi? His glasses have been ditched. Known for his bespectacled look, with his eyes adorned by thin-rimmed metal glasses, Rahul has been spotted without them at most public outings since May this year. Rahul and his office haven’t commented on the look, nor disclosed whether he’s wearing contact lenses or has had laser eye surgery.
He is not the only one to have ditched specs. A host of other celebs, too, are sporting the trend. City ophthalmologists say youngsters are following the trend, set by celebs such as Jessica Simpson, Tiger Woods, Abhinav Bindra and now Rahul Gandhi, who have all shelved their glasses. They also point to a noticeable rise in the use of contact lenses and incidence of laser eye surgery in the Capital in the past few months.
Dr Sanjay Dhawan, Head, Deptt of Eye, at Max Healthcare says, “In the past year, there has been a 50 per cent rise in cases of laser eye surgery or LASIK (Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis). The number of people using lenses is up by 40 per cent.”
Rajiv Kataria, contact lens specialist and dispensing consultant, says, “Although women still constitute almost 87 per cent of those who want to ditch specs, a lot of men, too, now want to get rid of their glasses.” Dr Rohan Chawla of Max Healthcare says, “We get around 50 queries a month on ways to get rid of glasses, as opposed to 20 a few months back. The methods include wearing lenses, doing eye exercises or getting laser surgery.” Kataria adds, “Youngsters get inspired by whatever celebs do. It’s the same with bidding goodbye to glasses.”
Actor Jessica Simpson, who went for laser surgery, said in an interview to Popdirt.com, “It’s like being healed by God! I was legally blind, I couldn’t see without glasses.” Closer home, shooter Abhinav Bindra and actor Raima Sen have also dumped glasses. Model Jas Arora says, “I used to wear glasses and wanted to ditch them for a long time. I like my look now.” Dr Dhawan says, “Besides cosmetic reasons, some also opt for lenses or Lasik as glasses can be a hindrance in adventure activities.”
Many, however, still think that glasses will never go out of fashion. “Some men look so hot wearing glasses. It brings about an elegance. I like Rahul Gandhi better with his specs on,” says DU student Nisha Seth.
