When it comes to children of celebrities, odds are, they’ll have unusual names. Persian, Hebrew, Greek, Russian or numerologically confounding spellings — Bollywood stars have done it all.

Actor Sanjay Dutt and wife Maanayata, who had twins a month ago, have chosen Persian and Hebrew names for their children. Their son has been named Shahraan, which means ‘warrior’ in Persian, and their daughter is called Iqra, a Hebrew word that means ‘to educate’. “They wanted great names and came across these while they were in Egypt recently,” says Dutt’s publicist.

Actor Karisma Kapoor, who had a baby boy eight months ago, named her son Kiaan, which is Hebrew for ‘grace of God’. Film-maker Farah Khan and husband, director Shirish Kunder named their triplets Czar, Anya and Diva. “The idea was to have unique, small names. Czar and Anya are Russian words,” said Kunder.

Actor Zayed Khan named his son Zidaan. “Zayed is a huge fan of soccer player Zinedine Zidane, but the name ‘Zidane’ didn’t mean anything, so we researched and I came across this name in a Persian book. Zidaan means ‘son’, so it was perfect,” says his wife Malaika.

Some say the choices have as much to do with astrology as with a desire to be unique. “People name their children after names chosen by Bollywood stars, so the stars try to keep unique names,” says director Mahesh Bhatt.

“The fore-most factor that celebs keep in mind is luck. Then comes uniqueness,” says numerologist Swetta Jumaani. “Kajol and Ajay Devgn have named their son ‘Yug’, which is lucky for a child born on September 13.”

“I told Rakesh Roshan to spell his grandson’s name as Hrehaan (actor Hrithik Roshan’s son) as it added to a lucky number,” says numerologist Niraj Mancchanda.
