After we told you about the turban making waves on the international fashion circuit, it’s the quintessential bindi that is making a retro Bollywood comeback on the global ramp, writes Medha Shri Dahiya.

After we told you about the turban making waves on the international fashion circuit, it’s the quintessential bindi that is making a retro Bollywood comeback on the global ramp.

Several international celebrities have taken a fancy to the trend, the latest being French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier, who sent a wave of excitement among Indians when he presented two models in Bollywood-inspired looks at the recently-concluded Paris Fashion Week.

While designer Shantanu Mehra calls it a “grand moment”, Rina Dhaka says, “I’m so happy! However, this is not the first time that Gaultier has used an Indian reference; he often does that. Even British fashion designer John Galliano often takes inspiration from India.”

Gaultier’s models wore black bindis and had bouffant hairdos — reminiscent of Bollywood heroines from the sixties. “It has been a trend in the past, too. Remember Madonna wearing it? It’s great to see India taking over the international fashion scene,” says designer Ritu Beri.

While singer Katy Perry is seen sporting the bindi quite often, actor-singer Selena Gomez was also seen wearing one recently. Actor Vanessa Hudgens, too, had posted selfies of her bindi avatar in December 2012. “Bindi has the potential of becoming a cool fashion accessory if used effectively. It stands out on the Western skin tone. It, however, but may not remain a long, sustainable trend,” says Mehra.
