Roses, roses, and more roses. That’s what we see when we walk into Sonal Chauhan’s home. The actor has an admirer. Not unheard of when you’re a Bollywood actor, of course (Chauhan has films such as Jannat and 3G — A Killer Connection to her credit). But this one’s been sending her 1,000 roses. Every day. Naturally, her Yari Road apartment resembles a florist shop at the moment. As we get talking about fashion, though, Audrey Hepburn comes up. Hepburn is Chauhan’s style icon (“She’s classic and timeless in every way”). In one corner of her living room, you see a black and white portrait of Hepburn from Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), looking at us and at Chauhan’s many roses.

What fashion means: “I’ve said this a lot of times: Fashion, to me, is my personal style. It’s never about blindly following fads or trends. I don’t really follow fashion magazines, or check out what’s in or what’s out. I just like to wear what I’m comfortable in.”

Closet staples: “A pair of blue denims, a white shirt, a white T-shirt and denim shorts are important. Also, a versatile blazer that can improve any outfit.”

Preferred colour: “You’ll see me mostly wear pastels in various colours. I like whites too. There’s no colour I would never wear, but I don’t really like sporting bright colours unless it’s an evening event and I’m wearing a jewel-toned outfit.”

Favourite shopping destination: “I shop from anywhere and everywhere. I’ve grown up in Delhi, and the street shopping at Sarojini Nagar and Janpath is great. It’s something I look forward to every time I go back home. I also love shopping in London - it’s classy and you’ll come across a lot of collections that are not available anywhere else in the world.”

Favourite brands: “Zara, H&M and Forever 21 are my go-to high-street shopping stores - they are stylish as well as reasonably priced.”

Favourite designers: “I love Zuhair Murad (Lebanese designer) for formal wear. Growing up, I was a big fan of Rohit Bal and continue to be. His designs are extremely elegant and timeless. Among new designers, I wear a lot of Tanieya Khanuja’s creations because her designs are fresh. She also does interesting red carpet gowns.”

Fashion faux-pas: “I’ve had many. Most of them have been make-up related. From using the wrong shade of foundation to wearing the ghastliest of lenses... I’ve done it all. Over the years, I’ve learnt a lot through trial and error.”

Lavish purchase: “A dress from Balmain. I saw Kim Kardashian wear one from the same line, so I bought it.”

Obsessed with: “I have a thing for shoes. I recently bought these really cool LED light-up sneakers from Selfridges in London. I used to be a heels person, but now I love sneakers. I think I can live in them. I’m obsessed with watches too. The one I’m most attached to is my first watch: an Ulysse Nardin.”

Latest buy: “I bought a lot of clothes, including a really cute shirt dress, from Singapore recently. Also, I’ve just picked up new perfumes from McQueen and Roja.”
