What better occasion than Durga Puja to vanquish sartorial boredom and rock looks that are not meant for the faint-hearted? For this festive shoot, we looked for style inspiration at unexpected places – the kaleidoscopic puja pandals, the tiny shops selling fragrant puja samagri, glass bangles and bright flowers, and the Bengali bride, who looks as resplendent as a goddess herself with her white mukut, red oversized bindi and intricate chandan designs on her forehead. We blended in a dash of Paharganj’s freewheeling nomadic charm and the result was this fun and quirky shoot that brings plenty of inspirations for those who believe in turning fashion rules on their heads. With outfits sourced from our own wardrobes (stellar pieces picked from the kitschy lanes of Paharganj and Janpath), we created looks that are guaranteed to make pandal-hopping a lot of fun for you. Styling a T-shirt featuring the goddess Kali in three different ways, we put together looks that are free-spirited, comfy and lighthearted. Pick up some inspo and visit the pandals in style!
Rocking some serious Bong swag
We teamed this bright T-shirt featuring the goddess Kali with a patch-work skirt and mauve gladiator sandals for this adventurous look. The red bindi, white mukut and shakha bangles were inspired by the radiant Bengali bride. The makeup was subtle yet refreshing — pale pink lips, soft smokey eyes and a feather-light base.
The fun, funky and freewheeling sari
A diagonal striped cotton sari teamed with T-shirt is what you wear when you do not want to look like everyone else visiting the pandal. We styled our model’s look with a marigold garland wrapped around the wrist, silver jhumkis and kala chashma for some extra swag. We finished with pop red sindoor, an elaborate white bindi design on her forehead and bold oxblood lips.
The bling loving boho
Printed dhoti pants paired with T-shirt and embroidered jhootis made for this super comfy yet festive look. We added a serious dose of bling with this gorgeous red chunni with gota patti and sequin work. The no-fuss boxer braids entwined with red ribbons gave a cool school girl vibe to this look. We finished with bubble pink lips, winged liner and an elaborate white bindi design on the forehead, with a small red dot in the centre.
